I agree that a lot of the ideals of religion are outdated now a days, but religion was essential to our survival!
In the beginning there was chaos between men. You think it is violent now? It is nothing compared to back in 10,000 CE.
We moved from a hunting and gathering society and as soon as agriculture was discovered, we all started to stay in one spot. As soon as we did this, men drew lines in the sand, next to their brothers. We fought each other with no rules, no law and no god.
We created many gods to explain the universe and why we are here… to give humanKIND, a purpose and to be nice to each other. We were mostly cannibals!! Lawless, eating each other until laws came in to effect because of the horrors of murder on society.
The code of Hammurabi taught people not to eat each other and gave us laws and things to live by. So did all the many religions we used to HUMANIZE mankind.
As much as some people hate Christianity here, it brought in more rules and laws, so that people would stop killing each other and stealing from each other. Were we corrupt? Of course… but it was the word of the law of this created god, that bound us together at the beginning and gave us a reason to be nice to each other. We couldn’t do it on our own.
In todays age, religion has become a tool of our evolution of drawing lines to kill each other, to cause division and to propagate hate. Even in this internet we draw lines against each other and judge each other, instead of reaching out to others with compassion…
This is all changing whether you believe it or not and people of the future will look at this age and wonder why we were so barbaric.
Ronald Regan was right when he said …
I couldn’t help but one point in our discussions privately with General Secretary Gorbachov. When you stop to think that we are all gods children where ever we may live in the world… I couldn’t help but say to him just think how easy his task and mine might be in these meetings that we held, if suddenly there was a threat to this world, from some other species from another planet, outside in the universe.
We would forget all the little local differences we have between our countries and we would find out once and for all that we are… all human beings here on this earth together.
In this new age of reason that we are entering, we need a driving force and I think most of us would agree, it should not be religion.
